Beginners Guide

The character creation and application form processes here on Devil’s Trap may be a bit different than what you’re used to, so we’ve created a handy guide which explains how to find the application form along with an explanation of the different fields.

How to Register

First, you need to register an account with Devil's Trap. To register click on 'Register' in the section above the board's banner. You may need to click on the teal bar above the banner for this to appear on mobile. Then fill out the needed information on the register page. This information should include the username of your account, your display name (please use the name you want to be known as out of character for this), the password you want to use for the account and a small tick box confirming you agree to the sites rules and our privacy policy. Then you may need to complete a recaptcha form to confirm you're not a bot.

How to Create a New Character

Once you're registered and logged in please complete the following steps:

• Go to the section above the board’s banner and look for your username followed by a small downward pointing arrow in the left hand corner. Click on this.

• Select Manage Characters from the drop down menu which appears.

• The My Characters page will open up. Read the message at the top of the page and click the Create Character button on the right hand side.

• The ‘Standard’ tab will open by default. This tab relates to the overall appearance of the character account you’re making. This tab will include fields for first name, middle name, last name, grouping and signature. The name fields are the username that will appear beside posts made from this character account. Most role-players tend to pick the name their character is commonly known by for this e.g. Crowley as opposed to Fergus McLeod. The grouping is the member group you want your character to belong to e.g. Demon. The signature field is the place to put any images or text you want to appear at the bottom of your character posts.

• Click on the ‘Biography’ tab to the right of the ‘Standard’ tab to begin the character application.

How to Complete the Application There are three sections to the application 'Basic’ ‘Appearance’ and ‘Background’. Below is a list of the fields these sections contain and what should be placed in them.

Basic

• Full Name: (This is pretty straightforward; what is your characters official name e.g. Fergus McLeod)

• Nickname: (This is an optional field where you can put the name your character is more commonly known by e.g. Crowley)

• Age: (How old is your character?)

• Pronouns: (What does your character prefer to be referred as? He/Him, She/Her, They/Them etc)

• Sexuality: (How does your character identify romantically and sexually e.g. Heterosexual, Bisexual, Homosexual, Homoromantic Bisexual, Asexual etc)

• Occupation: (What does your character work as?)

• Special Abilities: (This is a compulsory field for those who are applying for an original creature, as it is important for the admin team and your fellow members to understand your character abilities and weaknesses. Humans or those playing a creature with a species wide set of abilities such as vampires and werewolves do not need to complete this section. We would recommend those playing witches and psychics use this section to inform us of the specifics of their characters ability e.g. If they’re a telekinetic can they fling cars around or are they limited to smaller objects? Do they have full control over their ability or does it only manifest during times of extreme emotional distress.)

Appearance

•  Character Image: (Place an image of your character here).

•  Face Claim: (Place the name of your characters face claim here. This will automatically add their details to our Face Claim list).

•  Distinguishing features. (This is an optional field where you can explain how your character differs from the face claim chosen. Is the face claim six foot, two inches while your character is six foot? Have they features such as scars or tattoos their face claim lacks? How do they dress? Are they the type to always be found in crisp suits or do they prefer a more relaxed t-shirt and shorts approach to clothing? If you feel your chosen face claim completely represents your character leave this blank.)

Background

•  Parents: (Tell us about their parents: their names, their ages, their occupation, are they alive or dead?)

•  Siblings: (This is an optional field where you can tell us about their siblings: their name(s), their age(s), their occupation(s), are they alive or dead?)

•  Significant Other: (This is an optional field where you can tell us about your characters significant other: their name(s), their age(s), their occupation(s), are they married or in a long term relationship or a relatively new couple).

• Children: (This is an optional field where you can tell us about your character children: their name(s), their age(s), their occupation(s), are they alive or dead)

•  Freestyle: (This is the part of the application designed to allow you to show off your character and tell us who they are. How you do this is entirely up to you. It could be a traditional historical biography, a role-play sample where they reflect on key moments in their life, an interview etc the sky's the limit.)

Once you've finished the application and are ready to submit to for staff approval click the box beside 'Ready for Play' in the bottom left hand corner and click 'Save'. Once you've done that you don't need to do anything more as the system will automatically inform staff there's an application awaiting approval. If a staff member hasn't looked at your application within 48 hours feel free to send us a PM.

How do I view Mature [M] Threads

You may have noticed that some threads include [M] in the title. This indicates that particular thread contains content only accessible to members who are eighteen years or older. To gain access to these threads you need to change a few settings so the forum knows that you're over eighteen and happy to view such content.

• Go to the section above the board’s banner and look for your username followed by a small downward pointing arrow in the left hand corner. Click on this.

• Select Manage Profile from the drop down menu which appears.

• Click the box beside 'Display Mature content.

• Click the green Save button at the bottom of the page

• On the same page Click Profile from the list that appears above the 'Username' field.

• Enter your date of birth in the Birthdate field.

• Click the green Save button at the bottom of the page.

You should now be able to access mature threads with no issues.

How do I add tags to thread

Tags can be useful to include in threads. Using 'Open' for instance will make that thread appear in the sites discords 'open-thread-tag' channel. They can be used to indicate a threads availability e.g. open to everyone, open at invite/request only or open but only to certain member group etc. They are also a useful way of warning other members of the content included in the thread if it is a mature one. Tagging on Vesta is very easy and all you need to do is

• Click on the 'Tags' box which appears in the 'Create Topic' page.

• Type in the tag text you wish to include e.g. 'open' followed by a comma. Including the comma (,) is extremely important as the software won't recognise the tag without it.

• From there you should be able to enter your Thread title, post content, select whether its mature or not as normal.
